Minnesota Vikings' Rondale Moore Suffers Devastating Leg Injury in Preseason Opener

MINNEAPOLIS — In a brutal twist of fate, Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Rondale Moore was carted off the field with what appeared to be a significant leg injury during the team's preseason opener against the Houston Texans. The incident, which occurred in the second quarter, is a devastating blow for a player who was fighting to re-establish his NFL career after missing the entire 2024 season with a torn ACL.

Moore, a former second-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals, was making his debut for the Vikings after signing a one-year, "prove-it" deal with the team this offseason. He was positioned as a key competitor for a depth wide receiver role and punt return duties, a crucial position for the team, especially with a three-game suspension looming for star wideout Jordan Addison.

The injury took place while Moore was returning a punt. He was tackled along the sideline and immediately stayed on the ground, favoring his left leg. The replay showed what some are calling a "hip-drop" type of tackle, though no flag was thrown on the play. Trainers rushed to his side, and the cart was brought out. An emotionally distraught Moore was seen slamming his hands on the cart in frustration as he was driven off the field, a painful echo of the last time he was carted off a field almost exactly a year ago.

The injury is particularly disheartening given Moore's arduous road to recovery. After his rookie contract with the Cardinals expired, he was traded to the Atlanta Falcons in March 2024. However, his tenure with the Falcons ended before it ever began when he suffered a season-ending ACL tear in a joint practice last August.

Moore's signing with the Vikings was seen as a low-risk, high-reward move for the team. He was healthy and had been a standout in training camp, showcasing the explosive speed and agility that made him a promising prospect in the first place. The injury not only jeopardizes his season but also creates a significant hole in the Vikings' depth chart. The team will now have to re-evaluate their options for the wide receiver and punt returner positions as they head into the regular season.

Head coach Kevin O'Connell did not provide an official update on Moore's status after the game, but the visible distress of the player and the reaction of his teammates suggest the injury is severe. Further imaging and evaluation will be conducted in the coming days to determine the full extent of the damage and a potential recovery timeline.

For the Vikings, the loss of Moore adds to an already complicated wide receiver situation. With Justin Jefferson nursing a hamstring injury and Jordan Addison set to miss the first three games, the team's depth is being tested. The Vikings will need other players to step up to fill the void created by Moore's injury as they prepare for the regular season.
