Preseason Game 1: Hamstring Issue Keeps Cam Skattebo from NFL Debut

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – The New York Giants' first preseason game arrived without one of their most intriguing new faces. Rookie running back Cam Skattebo, a fourth-round pick from Arizona State, was officially sidelined with a hamstring issue, keeping him from his highly anticipated NFL debut against the Buffalo Bills.

Skattebo has been a standout performer in training camp, drawing attention for his physical running style and versatility. The rookie was expected to be a key part of the Giants' running back rotation, potentially serving in a committee backfield. However, a recent "setback" with his hamstring limited his practice time, and the team's coaching staff, while optimistic about his prognosis, decided to err on the side of caution.

Giants' head coach Brian Daboll has maintained that Skattebo is "getting better" and that all injured players are "making progress," but he also stressed that there is "no substitute for being out on the field playing, particularly young players that are trying to earn a spot." For a rookie like Skattebo, who is competing for a roster spot and meaningful playing time, every practice rep and preseason snap is crucial.

Skattebo's absence, along with a knee injury to fellow running back Eric Gray, has opened up opportunities for others in the backfield. The Giants recently signed veteran running back Jonathan Ward, who will join Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary in the running back competition.

The former Arizona State standout was a dynamic and versatile player in college, amassing over 4,300 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns in his career. His ability to run between the tackles, catch passes out of the backfield, and even throw passes on occasion made him a fan favorite and a valuable draft pick for the Giants.

While Skattebo’s debut is on hold, the Giants will be eager to get him back on the field as soon as he is healthy. The team will continue to monitor his progress daily as they prepare for the remainder of the preseason and the start of the regular season.
